초록/요약
Korean people have used incense for practical reasons as well as in a religious sense. Folk religion combined with Taoism, Confucianism, and Buddhism, incense has become an indispensable part in dedication to gods and ancestral rites. And incense burners, along with incense, were very popular. Incense burners have historical characteristics. They have been used in Buddhist rituals and ancestral rites, and to purify a body in actual lives and come in all shapes. But since modern era, incense burners have been used less and less. Porcelain incense burners of Chosun Dynasty as well as splendid incense burners of Goryeo Dynasty have been on the decline. But today incense gets out of religious meanings and is used more and more. Items such as incense burners and incense holders are also used more and more. Incense does not always function as air freshener. People under a lot of stress want to have their own space by burning incense to take a rest. It is all to ensure that they can look back at themselves and have time to concentrate on inner side in complex lives. Incense burners are used only as a utensil in ancestral rites, but they are used variously in enjoying incense. Therefore, one of the purposes of developing porcelain incense burners is to allow people to use them contently by increasing aesthetic values as well as practicality. Tigers with magpies in folk paintings are applied to increase formativeness in the course of designing incense burners. A painting of a tiger with a magpie, one of the representative folk paintings, is characterized by freedom and humor of folk paintings. It is a painting that reflect imagination and formativeness of folk paintings. And it instills inspiration into all areas of art. In various fields such as pottery as well as painting, fiber, and sculpture, a number of works are manufactured on the basis of such painting. A tiger is the one which Koreans like specially. It, along with magpies, becomes a subject matter in folk paintings. A tiger meaning driving away evil spirits becomes a subject of faith, while it also becomes a subject of satire in which a tiger is a yangban and a person with mighty power, and a magpie satirizes a tiger. A magpie in paintings is smart, but a tiger is naive. Though a tiger opens its eyes widely and bares its teeth, its smile and humor are so special that nobody can find such characteristics in other paintings. Therefore, the researcher attempted to manufacture porcelain incense burners by understanding those characteristics based on symbol and formativeness of such tigers with magpies, maintaining traditional beauty, and adding to modern sense.

우리나라는 예로부터 종교적 의미에서 뿐만 아니라 생활 속 실용적 이유에서 향을 이용해왔다. 민속신앙과 도교, 유교, 불교의 유입으로 신에 대한 봉헌과 제례의 의미로써 향은 의식에서 빠질 수 없는 것이었으며, 이에 그 도구인 향로 또한 함께 성행하였다. 향로는 시대별로 그 특색을 갖추면서 불교의 의식용, 제례용은 물론 실생활에서 향을 피워 몸을 정화하는 등의 완향용 향로로 쓰이며 모양을 달리하여 발전하게 된다. 그러나 근대에 접어들면서 향로의 쓰임은 점점 줄어들게 되고, 화려한 외관을 자랑했던 고려시대 향로는 물론 조선시대에도 존재했었던 도자향로 또한 그 명맥을 잊지 못하고 쇠퇴하게 된다. 그러나 오히려 현대에 이르러 종교적 의미를 벗어난 향의 사용이 증가하고 있고, 이에 향로나 향꽂이 같은 도구들이 점점 증가하고 있다. 향의 사용은 단순히 방향제로서의 기능만을 하는 것은 아니다. 스트레스가 많은 현대인들은 편안한 휴식을 위해 향을 피워 자기만의 공간을 만들고 있다. 이는 복잡한 삶 속에서 잠시나마 자신을 뒤돌아보고, 내면에 집중할 수 있는 시간을 갖기 위해서이다. 즉 향로는 제사 때 사용하는 제기로써의 기능은 일상생활 속에서는 더 이상 의미가 크지 않으나, 평상시 향을 즐기는 용도로서는 그 목적성이 점점 커지고 있다. 이에 도자 향로를 개발함에 있어서 실용성뿐만 아니라 미적 가치를 높여 곁에 두고 사용함에 있어서 모자람이 없게 하는 것이 본 도자향로 제작의 목적 중 하나라 하겠다. 이에 향로 제작의 디자인과정에서 조형성을 높이기 위해 민화 속 까치호랑이를 응용하고자 한다. 민화의 대표적인 그림 중 하나인 까치호랑이 그림은 민화의 자유롭고 해학적인 성격을 잘 갖추고 있다. 이는 민화의 상상력과 조형성이 그대로 잘 반영된 그림으로 시대를 거듭하며 예술의 여러 영역에서 영감을 불어넣어 주고 있어, 회화뿐만 아니라 섬유, 조각은 물론 도자 분야에서도 이를 소재로 삼아 탄생하는 작품들이 적지 않다. 한국인들이 특히 좋아하는 동물인 호랑이는 까치와 함께 등장해 민화 속 하나의 주제가 된다. 벽사의 의미를 지니고 있는 호랑이는 사람들에게 신앙의 대상이 되기도 하지만, 때로는 양반과 권세가가 되어 민초인 까치의 풍자 대상이 되고 있는 것이다. 그림 속 까치는 영민하지만, 호랑이는 어리숙하다. 아무리 눈을 크게 뜨고 이를 드러내고 있어도 그가 주는 웃음과 해학은 다른 어떤 회화 속 존재에서도 찾아보기 힘들 정도로 특별한 것이다. 따라서 본 연구자는 이러한 까치호랑이의 상징성과 조형성을 바탕으로 그 특성을 이해하여, 전통적인 미를 유지하면서도 현대적 감각을 더하여 이에 어울리는 도자 향로를 제작하고자 하였다.
